A current load test certificate does not give a shackle, spreader beam, lifting lug, or rigging assembly a lifetime pass. So, can load tested equipment expire? The practical answer is yes, but usually not in the simple sense of an expiration date stamped on the equipment. What expires may be the certificate’s accepted validity, the project approval, or the equipment’s safe condition after use, repair, damage, or changed service.
For a contractor trying to clear an inspection, that distinction matters. The equipment may still be physically sound, but an inspector can reject it when the documentation is outside the project’s required test interval or no longer matches the equipment’s current configuration. The reverse is also true: a recent certificate does not make damaged equipment acceptable for use.
A Load Test Is Proof at a Point in Time
Proof load testing demonstrates that a specific item or assembly performed under a prescribed test load at the time it was tested. The resulting certificate should identify the equipment, its rated capacity, the test load, the test date, the applicable standard or procedure, and the result.
That record is valuable evidence, but it is not a guarantee against everything that happens afterward. Equipment can be dropped, overloaded, altered, exposed to heat, corroded, welded on, or put into a different lifting arrangement. Any of those events can change the condition that was actually tested.
Think of a load test certificate as a snapshot tied to a known item and a known condition. If either changes, the original snapshot may no longer answer the inspector’s question: is this exact equipment, in this exact setup, ready to lift safely today?
What Can Make Load-Tested Equipment “Expire”?
There is no single expiration rule that applies to every piece of lifting equipment. The governing interval can come from the manufacturer, the authority having jurisdiction, a customer specification, a site safety plan, a port or marine requirement, or an engineer’s direction. Some equipment must be periodically tested. Other items require routine inspections and only need proof testing after a triggering event or when a project specifically requires it.
In the field, a previously accepted certificate can become insufficient for several reasons.
- A stated validity period has passed. A certificate, project specification, or client policy may require testing within a defined period, such as annually or before a particular phase of work.
- The equipment was repaired or modified. Welding, straightening, replacement of a critical component, recertification of a lifting point, or alteration to a fabricated beam can require re-evaluation and proof testing.
- The item has been damaged or shock loaded. A dropped component, suspected overload, bent hardware, damaged threads, broken weld coating, or deformation should take the equipment out of service until it is evaluated.
- The lifting configuration changed. A beam, lifting frame, lug plate, or rigging assembly tested in one arrangement may not be approved for another arrangement with different angles, connection points, capacity, or load path.
- The identification no longer matches the paperwork. Missing tags, unreadable serial numbers, swapped components, or unclear chain of custody can make a valid certificate difficult to defend during an inspection.
The key point is that a calendar is only one trigger. Condition, configuration, traceability, and site rules carry just as much weight.
Can Load Tested Equipment Expire if It Was Never Used?
It can, depending on the requirement behind the certificate. Equipment stored indoors, protected from corrosion, and never placed in service may remain in good condition. But if a contract or inspector requires a certificate dated within a certain window, lack of use does not extend that document window.
Storage also is not always benign. Coastal exposure, moisture, salt air, ultraviolet damage to synthetic components, and contact with chemicals can affect equipment that has been sitting still. In San Diego, equipment stored near marine operations deserves particular attention for corrosion and identification-tag condition.
Before putting stored equipment back into service, verify the tag or serial number, inspect it thoroughly, review the certificate against the intended lift, and confirm the project’s documentation requirement. Do not assume a clean-looking item is cleared because it was not used.
Certificate Date vs. Inspection Date
Jobsite teams often use the words “inspection” and “certification” interchangeably. They are related, but they are not the same thing.
A pre-use or frequent inspection is a condition check. The qualified person looks for damage, wear, deformation, missing markings, altered components, and other signs that the equipment should not be used. This check is ongoing because conditions can change between lifts.
A proof load test is a controlled test that verifies performance under a specified load. It produces formal documentation for the tested item or assembly. A visual inspection cannot replace a required proof load test, and a proof load test cannot replace pre-use inspection.
For project supervisors, the best practice is to keep both controls working: current documentation for the inspector and a clear field process for removing suspect equipment from service. One protects the schedule. Both protect the crew.
When Retesting Is the Right Call
Retesting is often the fastest path when documentation is missing, the certificate date falls outside the owner’s requirement, or a component has been repaired or altered. It is also appropriate when a fabricated lifting device is being used for a new project and the project team needs documented capacity before release.
Do not wait until the equipment is hanging over a work area to discover a paperwork gap. Review lifting devices, rigging assemblies, spreader bars, lifting lugs, and specialty fixtures during mobilization. Match each item to its certificate and confirm that the listed capacity, configuration, and identification match what will arrive at the jobsite.
There are trade-offs. Retesting equipment that has a clearly valid certificate and no change in condition may add unnecessary cost and downtime. On the other hand, trying to argue with an inspector over an old, incomplete, or mismatched certificate can cost far more than arranging a prompt test. When the requirement is unclear, get a decision from the project owner, engineer, safety representative, or authority that controls acceptance before the lift is scheduled.
What Documentation Should Be Ready?
A usable proof load testing package should be easy for a superintendent or inspector to review. Keep the certificate legible and tied to the exact item through a serial number, asset number, tag, or other durable identifier. It should show the rated capacity, test load, date, test method or applicable criteria, and the responsible testing party.
For assemblies, include enough detail to show what was tested together. A certificate for an individual shackle does not automatically certify a complete lifting fixture. Likewise, a certificate for a beam may not cover newly added slings, lifting points, or a revised rigging geometry.
Keep digital copies accessible to the people who need them in the field. A certificate buried in an office email chain is not helpful when an inspector is standing at the gate.
A Practical Jobsite Check Before the Inspector Arrives
Start with the planned lift, not the paperwork stack. Identify every load-bearing component involved, including custom devices and connection hardware. Confirm the expected load, center of gravity, sling angles, and capacity of the complete system.
Then compare the physical equipment against its records. Check that IDs are present and readable, capacities are appropriate, certificates are current under the project rule, and no repair, modification, or damage has occurred since testing. If any answer is uncertain, hold the item and resolve it before it reaches the work area.
This approach avoids a common failure: presenting a valid certificate for the wrong item or an approved item in the wrong configuration. Documentation should support the lift plan, not simply satisfy a filing requirement.
Keep Certification From Becoming a Schedule Problem
Load-tested equipment does not necessarily expire on a universal date, but its acceptance can. The certificate may age out under a project rule, the equipment may change condition, or the tested configuration may no longer match the planned work.
