This matters most for gear that moves between projects. A spreader bar that was accepted on one site may face different documentation requirements at the next site. The same is true for rented equipment, customer-owned fixtures, and gear transferred between divisions. A current record that clearly identifies the item reduces arguments at the jobsite and keeps the lift from becoming a schedule problem.
For custom lifting devices, documentation should also follow the engineering and fabrication trail. Capacity markings, drawings, weld procedures where applicable, inspection records, and proof load test results may all be part of the package a project requires. It should identify the customer or equipment owner, describe the item tested, show its serial number or unique ID when available, state the test load, provide the test date, and document the result. A certificate does not eliminate the need for pre-use and periodic inspections. Equipment can be damaged after testing. Bent components, stretched chain, crushed wire rope, damaged sling eyes, illegible tags, unauthorized modifications, and corrosion can all require removal from service or further evaluation.
