A proof test does not replace a visual inspection, engineering review, or manufacturer guidance when those items are required. Keeping those roles clear protects the crew and avoids presenting a certificate as more than it is.

Documentation Is What Gets You Through Inspection

Before testing, verify that the equipment can be positively identified. For custom devices without clear markings, establish an identification method that can be carried through the job records and future testing cycle.

Keep the certificate where the people who need it can find it. That may be in the project turnover file, the equipment maintenance record, the rigging binder, or a shared system used by the site superintendent and safety team. Sending a record to one person’s inbox is not the same as making it available to the project.

Moving heavy lifting equipment offsite is not always practical. It may require additional trucking, handling, labor, permits, or a pause in work that costs more than the test itself. Mobile testing can reduce that friction by bringing the service to the equipment, subject to the site, access, and test setup requirements.

The jobsite still needs to be ready. The testing area must allow safe access and controlled movement of personnel. The equipment must be accessible, clean enough to inspect, and arranged in its intended test configuration. If the test requires reaction points, support structures, space for test weights, or a particular orientation, those conditions should be confirmed before the crew arrives.

For some equipment, offsite testing remains the better option. Limited space, restricted access, unsuitable support conditions, or a complex fixture may make transport more efficient and safer. The practical answer depends on the item and the site. A good testing partner will identify that early instead of promising an onsite test that cannot be completed properly.

Avoid the Delays That Repeat Themselves

Most certification delays come from a short list of preventable problems. The equipment arrives without a rated capacity. The test requirement is not confirmed. The item is inaccessible when the testing crew arrives. A custom assembly has no drawing or identification. Or the project team discovers too late that the inspector needs a specific format or supporting record.

Prevent those delays by treating load testing as a scheduled project activity, not a last-minute inspection fix. Bring in testing support when equipment is purchased, fabricated, modified, repaired, or mobilized to the site. If the job has a turnover date, crane plan review, owner inspection, or commissioning milestone, work backward from that date and allow time for any corrections that may be needed.

Communication between the superintendent, safety lead, rigging lead, fabricator, and testing provider is especially valuable for custom gear. Everyone should be working from the same capacity, configuration, and intended use. A lifting beam tested for one arrangement may not automatically be approved for another arrangement with different load points or sling angles.

When a Fast Test Is Not the Right Answer

Urgency is real, but speed should never bypass a condition that needs attention. If equipment shows distortion, cracking, damaged welds, missing identification, excessive wear, or other signs of concern, the right next step may be repair, engineering review, replacement, or further inspection. Testing questionable equipment simply to obtain a certificate is not a solution.

The same applies when the equipment’s intended use has changed. A device designed for a known load and geometry may not be suitable for a new load path, off-center load, altered sling angle, or different service condition. Ask the question before the lift plan is finalized, not when the equipment is already staged under the hook.
